    With the 2008 games in Beijing and the 2012 games set for London, the western hemisphere seemed to have an edge. The knocks on Brazil's candidacy were the high crime rate in Rio and the fact that the country is slated to host soccer's 2014 World Cup, raising questions of its ability to manage both events.
