New Biopic: Amelia Earhart Must Be Rolling in Her Watery Grave  Oct 25, 2009
The tense final scenes posit a theory about what happened to Earhart over the Pacific that's in line with the conclusion reached by most of her biographers: a combination of chance mishaps and faulty communications between Earhart and a Coast Guard ship stationed below resulted in her plane running out of fuel before she could locate the tiny landing strip built for her on Howland Island. For nearly 18 hours, Earhart's twin-engine Lockheed Electra drummed steadily eastward over the Pacific, and as sunrise etched a molten strip of light along the horizon, navigator Fred J. Noonan marked the time and calculated the remaining distance to Howland Island. The date was July 2, 1937, and the pair were near the end of a 2,550-mile trek from Lae, New Guinea, the longest and most perilous leg of a much-publicized "World Flight" begun 44 days earlier in Oakland. Why Can't Women Be More Like Amel...  Jul 24, 2009
If she hadn t crashed in 1937 somewhere around Howland Island, chances are she would have become the first woman to circumnavigate the world. She already held the distinctions of being the first woman to fly the Atlantic solo, the first person to fly solo between Honolulu and Oakland, the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the first woman to fly an autogyro, which is a crude helicopter thing -- not a sex toy or automatic Greek sandwich.
