    The electoral seat of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is on Hokkaido island, part of the ancient homeland of the Ainu, which once stretched from northern Honshu island to the Kuril and Sakhalin islands now ruled by Russia. Hatoyama, in a recent parliamentary address, said he wants a society free of discrimination and prejudice, and hopes to promote cultural diversity, including by respecting the history and culture of the Ainu people.     The Sekiguchi family lives in Fujioka, a semi-rural area on Japan's Honshu island, and their lives are sustained by the manufacturing business the family started 45 years ago. Hidehiko Sekiguchi, 68, the head of the family, started the business, which produces plastic fixings for Toyota and Subaru cars in this suburb of Takasaki City, Gumma Prefecture, in Honshu's northwest Kanto plains.     Every year on the first of September, in a small town called Taiji on the southeast coast of 's Honshu Island, a new fishing season begins: the dolphin season. Twenty-six fishermen in 13 boats corral a few dozen dolphins into a small cove, where they kill the animals by stabbing them repeatedly with long harpoons and knives. (National Geographic)

    Clinton's plane lands in Japan for refueling  Aug 5, 2009
    NHK's news footage showed the plane landed at the U.S. Misawa Air Base in Aomori prefecture on Honshu island, at 10:25 a.m. local time (0125 GMT). Clinton's plane is en route to Los Angeles after the two U.S. journalists were freed from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). (Xinhuanet, China)

    * Japanese rescuers battle clock in hunt for mudslide victims  Jul 24, 2009
    Search operations are getting more and more difficult, but we are working on the assumption that there are survivors, said a police spokesman by telephone from hard-hit Yamaguchi Prefecture on Honshu island. One person was still missing on the mud-filled ground floor of the two-story nursing home where at least six people died when a large landslide hit the building in Hofu City on Tuesday.     Body of Chinese sailor on sunk cargo ship discovered off Japan  Mar 29, 2009
    The body of the Chinese motor mechanic was found off the village of Nashiro, Honshu Island, the Itar-Tass news agency reported, citing sources of the Vladivostok rescue center. A Sierra Leone-flagged vessel named New Star sank off Russia's far-east port of Vladivostok on Feb. 15 after coming under fire from Russian coast guard vessels. (Xinhuanet, China)
